1.  Protect your appliances. The majority of retainers and aligners get lost or broken because they were accidentally thrown away wrapped up in a napkin or paper towel. Invisalign Teen is one of the most popular orthodontic treatments because the aligners are removable for eating, drinking and dental care. However, because they are clear and light, the aligners can easily be overlooked in the rush to get to class on time and tossed out with the trash. Always keep an extra case for your retainer or aligners in your bag or locker.

2.  Keep breath fresh. The brackets and wires of braces can trap food particles and become a breeding ground for the bacteria that cause bad breath. Keeping teeth clean also prevents dental decay, which can cause white spots around fixed brackets and bands and cavities. We recommend putting together a bag with a toothbrush, toothpaste, dental floss or a small dental brush and wax for mid-daydental care. Having those tools handy means there is no excuse for picking at teeth with other objects like toothpicks, forks or pen caps that can damage the appliances.

3.  Prevent injuries. Wearing a mouthguard is always important, especially when you have fixed braces. For the teeth, lips, cheeks and the tongue to avoid injury during sports, make sure you have a properly fitted mouthguard to wear and a case to keep it in when not in use. Mouthguards do wear out so they should be checked periodically for tears and other signs of wear.

4.  Pack a lunch. The cafeteria at school may not always have braces-friendly food. Foods that get stuck in the cracks and crevices of teeth are best to stay away from, unless you're planning to brush and floss after eating. Avoid hard, sticky foods that can damage appliances because broken or bent wires can set back treatment time. Snacks and lunches that include banana slices, seedless grapes, canned fruit, applesauce or pudding cups, thinly chopped raw vegetables, soups, sandwiches or pasta are safe for people wearing braces.

Summer 2015

                                             Summer 2015

Patient Feature of the Month: Troy Sweeney, 19 years old
Troy is one of our wonderful patients who is a student and an Invisalign patient. He shares his love for soccer and how he balanced school life and his social life.

AO: What college do you attend? Do you have a major and if so what is it?

Troy: UVA, commerce- its broad and general in the business majors. I can go in different sections of business. In the future I'd like to become a professor and teach.

AO: What are the challenges you faced the first year of college?

Troy: Managing sleep, social life, and homework. I trained my body for less sleep. It wasn't hard to transition from home to college. I was ready to become independent and use my freedom.

AO: You play soccer, tell us about it. Why do you like it and do you play in college?

Troy: Yes I played for Duquesne University, and I like it because its relaxed and fun. Soccer actually kept me on schedule and helped me out in college.

AO: Did playing soccer help you with getting into college? If not, what helped you the most? What's your favorite national team ?

Troy: Yes, but academically it didn't. I like soccer because it's not so structured. Soccer lets you play and let you think how you want to play. My favorite international team is Netherlands/Holland.

AO: How was your Invisalign treatment here?

Troy: Invisalign was easy, I was worried about losing the aligners but I never did. It was hard in college because of my class schedule but got easier with time. Invisalign is a lot better than braces and only three people noticed it.

AO: What do you like about Ashburn Orthodontics and Dr. Kortam?

Troy: I love everything about Ashburn Orthodontics, but what I like most is how uplifting and kind the staff is. They make the experience much more enjoyable.

AO: Any word of advice to our readers?

Troy: No matter how tired you are, get up and go take care of your teeth because you'll regret it if you don't.

Thank you, Troy for taking the time and sharing with us your transition to adulthood. We wish you the absolute best in college and hope you'll always play soccer!

Giving back to our community- at Eagle Ridge Middle School

As part of our community outreach we joined Diane Green, VP of Fundraisers for Eagle Ridge for a special event coming up in August. Kirk Martin of Celebrate Calm is coming in for a two day event for all Northern Virginia parents and teachers hosted by Eagle Ridge. Martin is a world-renowned educational organizer and has presented to over 400,000 people in 1,200 shops all over. We are very excited to have provided this opportunity to our community.

ALL PARENTS ARE INVITED

Martin will have a special session for parents, a workshop on how to transition your relationship as your child transition into adulthood. He will also have a teacher workshop seminar where he will coach teachers on how to come as one in the school and become confident teachers and leaders. The event is open to all residents and parents of NoVA. We are very excited to see what we will all learn from this event and how the kids will benefit from our school community becoming united and stronger.

Friday, August 21st:

Teacher Training- Daytime
Parent Workshop: 7pm-9pm

Link below will give you more information on Kirk Martin and Celebrate Calm. We hope you can join us all. Parents love the event because of the insightful information that will be shared. We are very excited to sponsor the event for Eagle Ridge and the community of Ashburn.

Keeping your face and mouth SAFE!

April was National Facial Protection Month. Kids who are active in sports and activities require a mouthguard to save their face and teeth. In 2014 we were happy to provide the Loudoun Country Rugby Team's mouthguard for free.

And as part of our continued efforts for the community we'd like to host a "Free Mouthguard Day". Any child who would like a customized mouthguard will be able to make an appointment for a free mouthguard on July 22, 2015 from 11am-3pm.

March 2015

March 2015

Patient Feature of the Month: Meet Rmaah Memon, 19 years old

At a very young age Rmaah has entered a world of medicine. Learning from her family and finding what her passion is- she set sail to Missouri, Kansas to pursue a medical degree. Giving our readers an advice worth following!

AO:   Rmaah, please share with us where you go to school and what your day is like?

Rmaah:   I attend medical school at the University of  Missouri Kansas City.  I have classes from the afternoon until late evening. Work life balance is a bit tough, but during the weekend I try to study as much as I can and hang out with friends in the city.

AO:   Why did you pursue medical school? Are you planning on being a doctor?

Rmaah:   I've always wanted to help people. I come from an extensive background, one of my brothers is a doctor, the other one is an attorney and my father has his Ph.D. I've always liked science and felt that I wanted to help people. I even took different classes, such as politics, but I believe it's "my calling"

AO:   What about medical school do you love or dislike?

Rmaah:   My school consists of a 6-year program where they combine a bachelor's degree with medical school and they do not require MCAT scores. This saves time, because you get to be finished earlier by combining the two.

AO:    How has your Invisalign treatment been and your experience been with us?

Rmaah:     Invisalign went well, it got a bit harder in college but easier with time and routine. I like that it's better than braces. I feel Dr. Kortam has a friendly personality and really cares for her patients.

AO:   Any word of wisdom you could give our readers?

Rmaah:     An advice I can give to people is "whatever your dream is...whatever your passion is- work hard and you'll get there"

We wish Rmaah a successful semester and many more to come. We hope she will practice in the area and care for our  loved ones and our community. Best of luck!!!

March continued with Dental Hygiene Month and Dr. Kortam visited more schools to discuss the importance of dental hygiene.

Trailside Middle School

In 2014 we sponsored Trailside Middle School's student t-shirts and the kids were so thrilled to have their logo proudly displayed. When we returned for Dental Hygiene Month, they welcomed us with great big smiles.

Keeping the excitement going!

We decided to give a quick and short quiz after the presentation at Trailside and one lucky winner got an iPad mini as a prize. Pictured on the right is VP Mr. Hanselman, Principal Mrs. Beichler, iPad winner Mackenzie, Dr. Kortam, and Nima. Congrats, Mackenzie- we hope you enjoy!

Celebrating our patients!

It was Charlie's birthday in February and like we always do, we pick a random birthday boy/girl and we celebrate in whichever way we can. We decided to surprise Charlie at Virginia Academy. Individual wrapped cupcakes with Charlie's face! We had a great time!

VEX Robotics
We love our community and will do our best to always support it. So when Mr. Kaylor of Stone Hill contacted our office to sponsor their scrimmage with a raffle item we were thrilled to do so. Our donation raised enough funds to purchase a practice field! Good luck Stone Hill Robotics Team, we wish you lots of success!

February National Children's Dental Health Month

February was National Children's Dental Health Month and Dr. Kortam was very busy visiting schools in our community to teach kids about dental hygiene and the importance of it. We were welcomed with warmth and great big smiles and had a great time with every school.

Loudoun Coop School Visit

We loved returning to Loudoun Coop School and seeing the kids remembering Dr. Kortam! She was welcomed with beautiful small smiles. The students were curious to learn more information and were very intrigued by the dinosaur that Dr. Kortam uses to teach kids about brushing and flossing.
Providence Academy- So Cheerful!

Pictured below is Dr. Kortam at Providence Academy in Leesburg, VA. Providence students
from KG to 8th grade, were full of energy and were gracious hosts. They asked lots of great questions and we were happy to be part of their learning day.

Harper Park Middle School

At Harper Park Middle School, Dr. Kortam presented to 6th & 8th graders. Many of them knew the importance of dental hygiene, but it is always a great reminder to discuss the correct ways to brush and floss.
Special Day At Creighton's Corner

Creighton's Corner Elementary School's dental hygiene presentation was very special to Dr. Kortam's triplets and eldest son, as they attend the school. Her triplets were very excited to see their mother present about dental hygiene month. The students were wonderful and very welcoming. It was Dr. Seuss' week and lots of students and teachers were dressed in his honor, we had a blast!

Big Crowd at Discovery!

At Discovery Elementary School, we had a full house! It was really nice to see almost 400 students excited to learn about dental hygiene. At such young age, these students knew some of the hard questions asked. We were very impressed. Great questions and stories were a theme among the wonderful students!

February 2015

Patient Feature of the Month: Meet Ingrid Roberts, age 13

While there are many traits that make Ingrid a typical teenager who likes to shop with her sister and hang out at the beach, she is also managing a budding musical career with her family. We are so proud of her early success and pretty sure you'll enjoy learning about her band, Queens Over Kings, in the article below. Make sure you check out their website also - queensoverkingsband.com.

AO - Fill us in on all this talk of you and your band performing live in front of large audiences and possibly securing record deals in the future.

Ingrid - It's pretty cool and very exciting. Yeah, our band is receiving a lot of attention regionally. We play summer festivals and weddings all up and down the east coast and are planning to play for beach parties sponsored through Carnival Cruises in Cozumel and the Grand Caymans in October. We also have an opportunity to travel to Hollywood and meet with Chrysalis and Disney Records to audition for a potential record deal.

AO - How fun is that - Congratulations! What instruments do you specifically play?
Ingrid - I play keyboards, drums, clarinet, and lead vocals on some songs.

AO - Tell us more about the band. How did you get started?

Ingrid - The band name is Queens Over Kings and we formed in 2009. I am in the band with my four siblings and we range in ages from 11-25.

AO - What kind of music do you all play? Any favs you like most to perform?
Ingrid - We play covers of The Beatles and No Doubt and several others. We also write our own original music! I really like to play re-imagined Disney favorites.

AO - Ok, so when you aren't leading the life of a young pop star, what are you doing? What are your favorite subjects at school? Any thought to what career, other than music, you'd like to pursue?

Ingrid - I go to Farmwell Station Middle and I really like math. I am also a black belt in Tae Kwon Do. And I think I'd like to be a forensic pathologist as a career. But music will always be important to me. And a long term goal linked to that would be to get a record deal. Maybe in 2015!

AO - The last question that I ask everyone is what you like most about Ashburn Orthodontics?

Ingrid - I love how special I am treated here. I love that I can pick different colors for my bands each visit. And I love the happy and upbeat atmosphere in the office.

We would like to wish Ingrid, the entire Roberts family and band a busy and fantastic summer, with all the touring. And we'll be following the band for that record deal on the horizon. We hope that when Ingrid is accepting her Grammy award, she remembers her friends at Ashburn Orthodontics!
